Gigawatt Dreams to Reality: Realizing the potential of offshore wind to avert a climate crisis

H.E Ms Razan Al Mubarak, President of the IUCN and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, speaking at the Our Ocean Summit on 3 March, explains why it's critical the world realizes its offshore wind potential. By Climate Champions | March 3, 2023

Offshore wind alone has the potential to provide more than enough energy to power the world four times over. Installations can be located close to heavily populated coastal cities that have little open land available and is a less costly and more reliable energy source than imported fossil fuels for many island nations and remote coastal communities.

The Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), launched at COP27, was established as a driving force for the adoption of offshore wind globally – with a focus on developing countries. The Alliance is aiming to deliver on the offshore wind breakthrough (380 GW of offshore wind installed by 2030), while ensuring net-gain for biodiversity in areas.
