Activating ambitious climate policy

Race to Zero’s Partners and 11,000+ members have strengthened norms on net zero and have demonstrated leadership through implementing pledges and accelerating action  — all of which is already driving emissions reductions in the real economy.

However, delivering a just and inclusive global transition to a resilient net zero society also requires a supportive policy and regulatory environment. All non-state actors and governments have a critical role to play to activate ambitious climate policy that will limit warming to 1.5oC. We all win or lose this race, together.

About the 5th

Race to Zero sets out criteria that members should work towards in order to deliver the collective goal of halving global emissions by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050 at the latest. In June 2022, the 5th criterion – ‘Persuade’ – was added, following an extensive and wide ranging consultation with experts and Race to Zero Partners.

The 5th P was added in recognition of the fact that voluntary action alone is not sufficient to keep global warming to less than 1.5C. The creation of a supportive and climate aligned regulatory and policy environment is critical to enable all actors to achieve net zero in the context of a just transition and in the light of different national circumstances.

The call to action

On Thursday 22 June, The UN Climate Change High-Level Champions released a call to action for non-state actors to join the Race to Zero and align their advocacy, policy and engagement with net zero goals.

This call to action is endorsed by We Mean Business Coalition, Influence Map, Environmental Defense Fund, and Ceres, and supported by Race to Zero Partners, like Net Zero Asset Managers, Under2 Coalition and Science Based Targets initiative.

The 5th P (Persuade) Handbook

On Monday 26 June, Race to Zero released the 5th P (Persuade) Handbook. The purpose of the Handbook is to consolidate existing critical resources on net zero advocacy, policy, and engagement and to summarise best practice. The Handbook also aims to recognise leadership and ‘pockets of the future in the present’, by showcasing case studies from Race to Zero members on the action they are taking to align with the 5th P (Persuade). We thank those who contributed to this product of radical collaboration.
