ACHIEVING THE 2030 BREAKTHROUGH

TECHNOLOGY / SUPPLY

How suppliers can help

  1. Suppliers have 1.5°C aligned 2030 targets.
  2. Suppliers transition to 100% renewable energy by 2025.
  3. Suppliers certify 20% of their most purchased products to a recognized third-party eco-label with a carbon footprint.
  4. Companies must reduce emissions from Category 1 of scope 3 activities: purchased goods and services. This makes up a significant portion of the sector’s footprint.
DEMAND

How the market can influence change

  1. Healthcare systems must implement sustainable procurement practices into their purchasing of goods and services.
FINANCE

The support required from government and industry

  1. A large knowledge gap exists on the amount of investment required to reach a net zero pharmaceutical and medical technology sector. McKinsey estimates that “capital spending on physical assets for energy and land-use systems in the net-zero transition between 2021 and 2050 would amount to about $275 trillion, or $9.2 trillion per year on average.” However, this is a multi-industry estimation and does not capture a sector specific lens for Pharmaceuticals.
POLICY

Visible, tangible support from governments and organisations

  1. Policy makers must call global healthcare systems to make net zero commitments.
  2. Government agencies must mandate policies for just and sustainable value chains.
CIVIL SOCIETY

How individuals and organisations can mobilise change

  1. Patient advocacy groups support net zero pharmaceuticals and low carbon healthcare systems.
  2. All major science funders require green labs as criteria for grant funding.
  3. Scientific journals incorporate sustainability into submission guidelines for articles.

A CALL TO ACTION

30 Nov - 12 Dec 2023, Expo City Dubai

WHAT'S NEEDED BY COP28?

  1. Pharma companies: don’t forget about your labs. They are extremely resource intensive, utilizing an average of 10x more energy and 4x more water than the office space.
  2. Pharma companies need to align on a sustainability ask for their Tier 1 suppliers.
  3. Companies must drive down scope 3 emissions, starting with the largest emissions category: purchased goods and services.
