ABOUT
Sellah Bogonko is the Co-Founder & CEO of Jacobs Ladder Africa (JLA), a youth-focused organization dedicated to creating 30 million green economy jobs in Africa by 2033. Operating at the intersection of youth unemployment and climate change, JLA tackles these challenges by advocating for and generating green jobs across the continent. They achieve this through research, a climate-tech incubator, and large-scale programs in partnership with local governments. JLA also leads the Africa Climate Ambassadors Programme (ACAP), which aims to amplify diverse voices in support of Africa’s climate opportunity narrative.
In addition to her work with JLA, Sellah is the founder of Zinduka, an apolitical, youth-driven platform that empowers young Kenyans to actively participate in democracy and nation-building. With experience spanning private, public, and non-governmental sectors, Sellah holds a BA in Business, an MSc in Public Leadership, and is currently pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Development at the University of Sussex. She has also completed Public Policy programs, including at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
MOTIVATIONS
“Hope fuels my journey – not a hollow promise, but a force as potent as storm clouds heavy with rain. This hope springs from the belief in our divine design, both as individuals and as stewards of this Earth. It whispers of a birthright, a latent potential within each of us, waiting to be awakened and realized.
At Jacob’s Ladder Africa, we stand at a transformative crossroad. We recognize that Africans possess the innate ability to become the solution providers we’ve long awaited. Our mission is to harness this inherent creativity, foster innovation, and forge partnerships that will sculpt a new future – one we build with our own hands and hearts. We envision a sustainable Africa where dignity is not a luxury but a fundamental right, and where prosperity flows abundantly, touching every life, not just a privileged few.
Jacob’s Ladder Africa sees the green economy as a powerful opportunity for African youth. Green jobs offer not only employment but also a purpose-driven career path that meets the continent’s urgent needs. By embracing sustainable technologies, renewable energy, and eco-friendly practices, we’re nurturing a generation of environmental stewards and economic innovators.
These opportunities span agriculture, energy, construction, and technology, creating a broad platform for young Africans to apply their skills. Climate change presents unprecedented challenges but also invites innovative solutions. By equipping youth with relevant skills and connecting them to these growing green sectors, we’re addressing unemployment and positioning Africa as a leader in global sustainability. This green revolution aims to unlock economic potential, preserve natural heritage, and empower African youth to shape a sustainable future.”
IMPACT
Under Sellah’s leadership, Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) has launched several impactful programs to empower youth and drive growth in Africa’s green economy:
- Through its Climate and Advocacy division, JLA creates and collaborates on advocacy campaigns, hosting policy and sector-specific roundtables that engage stakeholders and increase awareness of green economy opportunities.
- As the host of the “Green Jobs Africa” show, Sellah plays a vital role in public education and advocacy, showcasing career paths and opportunities in the sustainable economy.
- JLA supports Climate Entrepreneurship Development through its GreenLabs initiative, an incubator aimed at boosting the pipeline of scalable green ventures in food systems, energy systems, and water and waste management across Africa.
- The organization also runs Climate Intrapreneurship Development Programs in partnership with county governments, engaging youth in grassroots projects across aquaculture, livestock, waste management, tree nurseries, biochar production, and apiary management.
- The Africa Climate Ambassadors Programme (ACAP), in collaboration with partners like The Africa Leadership Institute (AFLI), Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A), and The Africa Center, seeks to amplify the diversity and reach of voices championing Africa’s climate opportunity narrative.
CHALLENGES
JLA has faced challenges in securing climate capital and addressing the socio-political barriers to youth employment in many African countries. To overcome these, the organization has focused on building strong partnerships with governments, NGOs, and the private sector, ensuring that young people have access to the training, resources, and networks necessary for success in the green economy.
GOALS
By 2033, JLA aims to activate 30 million green jobs across Africa, contributing to both the continent’s economic development and its transition to a sustainable future. The organization plans to expand its advocacy, training, and entrepreneurship programmes, continuing to empower African youth to lead the continent’s green economy revolution.
SELLAH’S ADVICE
“To drive meaningful climate action and create economic opportunities for youth in the green economy, we must approach this challenge with hope, passion and pragmatism.
For individuals, I cannot stress enough the importance of continuous learning. The green economy is rapidly evolving, and staying informed about the latest trends, technologies, and policies is crucial. Seek out training programs, attend workshops, and engage with online resources to build your expertise. Don’t underestimate the power of networking – connect with professionals already working in sustainability roles and learn from their experiences.
For organizations, my advice is twofold: First, integrate sustainability into your core business strategy. This isn’t just about corporate social responsibility; it’s about future-proofing your business and opening new avenues for growth and innovation.
Second, invest in youth. Create internship programs, partner with educational institutions, and provide mentorship opportunities. By nurturing young talent, you’re not only addressing youth unemployment but also cultivating the next generation of climate leaders. Remember, driving climate action is not just about technology or policy – it’s about people.
By empowering youth and creating tangible economic opportunities in the green sector, we can build a sustainable future that benefits both our communities and our planet. The time for action is now, and each of us has a role to play in this green revolution.”
