ABOUT

Ramil Azmammadov leads Dr. Agro, an AgriTech platform that brings precision and traditional farming tools to farmers in Azerbaijan. Through an easy-to-use website and mobile app, Dr. Agro provides farmers with tools for budgeting, crop planning for more than 30 plants, disease alerts, and localized climate data. With these resources at their fingertips, farmers can make decisions aimed at improving crop yields and managing resources effectively.

MOTIVATIONS

“In 2016, together with another co-founder Surkhay, we established a consulting company to provide services to Azerbaijani farmers. As we worked with farmers, we realized that some services could be delivered online, allowing us to reach thousands of farmers. That was our main motivation: to reach and support more farmers. We carefully analyzed the work we had done and the problems we had solved. And gradually we shifted our services to an online platform. This is how we created Dr. Agro. With over 8 years of experience in this field, we deeply understand farmers’ challenges and the solutions they need.”

IMPACT

Before

Before Dr. Agro, many Azerbaijani farmers relied heavily on traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Without access to data-driven insights, they faced challenges in crop planning, budgeting, and disease prevention, often leading to stagnated yields and financial uncertainty.

After

Since its launch, Dr. Agro has delivered a wide range of benefits to farmers in Azerbaijan:

  • Dr. Agro provides 5000+ farmers with detailed planting plans, covering every stage from soil preparation to harvesting. This includes guidance on soil preparation, seed selection, and the timing of fertilizers and agrochemical applications.
  • The platform calculates costs for seeds, agrochemicals, and fertilizers, providing farmers with an estimate of expected earnings based on productivity and sales.
  • Through AI-driven insights, Dr. Agro alerts farmers about optimal times for spraying and fertilizing, helping them avoid input wastage. Weather data, humidity levels, and wind speeds are analyzed to determine the best conditions for these activities, supporting better planning and resource management.

CHALLENGES

Adopting modern AgriTech in Azerbaijan hasn’t come without hurdles. Many farmers were initially reluctant to abandon traditional methods, often stating that “they know the best techniques” based on ancestral knowledge. This hesitation, says Ramil, led to lower yields, as farmers were producing similar output levels as previous generations. Dr. Agro worked hard to build trust, demonstrating how technology could improve their productivity and simplify daily farm activities.

GOALS

“Like all startups, we wanted to expand the geographic areas we serve. We initially planned to enter the Central Asian and Turkish markets. This plan materialized quickly and in an unexpected way. Our acquisition discussions with the Netherlands-based startup Agcurate concluded with the signing of the contract in May this year. Now, I work closely with the Agcurate team to offer new services in these regions.”

RAMIL’S ADVICE

“Innovation and modern technology differ across countries and regions. For example, innovation may be understood one way in highly developed countries and another way in developing or less developed countries. My suggestion is that anyone interested in AgTech should study the region and target group thoroughly: who they are serving and what kind of problem is their services or devices are going to solve. Do the farmers really need it? In regions where farmers struggle to access water or basic machinery, will drones or other high-tech devices truly solve their challenges? Many questions need to be answered before starting. I wish all AgTech startup co-founders good luck and patience.”
